Core principles:
Fold the bottom of the box first, then the lid.
Fold along the pre pressed crease line. These creases on cardboard are usually dashed or creased.
Diagonal fixation is key. Many boxes rely on inserting inserts into opposite sockets to secure them.
Pay attention to directionality. Ensure that the creases on the bottom and top of the box are aligned (usually with the "mountain fold" facing outward and the "valley fold" facing inward).
Required materials:
Flat cupcake box (including cardboard bottom and lid)
Your hands (nails or ruler edges help compress creases)
Folding steps (taking a common six box with a lid as an example):
Part 1: Folding Box Bottom
Identify the bottom of the box: Find the larger piece of cardboard, which usually has 6 or 12 circular indentations in the middle (for placing cakes).
Flatten creases: Spread the cardboard completely flat on the tabletop. Use your fingers or ruler to press along all the pre pressed creases (especially the creases used to form the side walls on the periphery) with force, making the creases clearer and easier to fold.
Stand up the side walls: Fold the four sides of the cardboard box (usually the narrow strip) vertically up 90 degrees along the creases.
Handle corner inserts: Observe the four corners. Each corner should be composed of two adjacent side walls, with one side wall having a protruding trapezoidal or triangular insert at the end, and the other side wall having a corresponding socket gap at the end.
Fix the first corner:
Fold the side wall with the insert towards the adjacent side wall with the socket.
Carefully insert the plug into the adjacent side wall socket. It usually requires a slight push to the bottom to ensure that the plug is completely inserted through the socket and secured.
At this point, the first corner has been preliminarily fixed, forming a right angled sidewall.
Fixed diagonals (key steps):
Go to the diagonal position opposite to the first fixed angle.
Repeat step 5: Fold the side wall with the insert towards the adjacent side wall and insert the insert into the socket. Fixing this diagonal is very important as it can help stabilize the structure of the entire box.
Fix the remaining two corners:
Now fix the remaining two corners (usually adjacent ones).
Similarly, fold the side wall with the plug towards the adjacent side wall and insert it into the socket.
Inspection and reinforcement:
Confirm that all four corner inserts are securely inserted into the corresponding sockets.
Press down on all the creases on the side walls again, especially at the connector of the insert, to ensure that the bottom of the box is square and stable in shape.
Part 2: Folding Box Cover
Identify the box cover: Find the smaller piece of cardboard, usually flat or slightly raised in the middle (used to cover the top of the cake), without any recessed compartments.
Flatten creases: Similarly, lay the cardboard box cover flat and press down firmly on all pre pressed creases.
Stand up the side walls: Fold the four sides of the cardboard box cover (usually shorter than the bottom side walls) vertically up 90 degrees along the creases. Pay attention to the direction: Ensure that the crease direction is consistent with the bottom of the box (for example, all "mountain folds" facing outward).
Processing corner inserts: The four corners of the box cover are processed in the same way as the bottom of the box, with inserts and sockets.
Fixed corners of the box cover:
Similarly, first fix a corner: fold the side wall with the insert piece towards the adjacent side wall and insert it into the socket.
Then fix its diagonal corners.
Finally, fix the remaining two adjacent corners.
Inspection and reinforcement: Confirm that all inserts are firmly inserted, press the creases to make the box cover square in shape.
Part Three: Combination (Cover)
Alignment direction: Pick up the lid of the box and ensure that it is completely aligned with the crease direction on the bottom of the box (so that it can be closed smoothly). The shape of the box cover and bottom usually correspond perfectly.
Closing: Carefully align the lid with the bottom of the box and cover it vertically downwards. The side wall of the box cover should just fit on the outside of the side wall at the bottom of the box (or sometimes be tightly attached to the inside, depending on the design, but it is most common to fit on the outside).
Confirm tightness: Gently press the top four sides of the box cover to ensure that it is fully closed and not lifted. After a sturdy box is closed, it should feel stable and not easily come loose.
